8x Nvidia GPU can become true once again

What would you do with 8x Nvidia G80/G90 Gpus in a computer system? Of course you would have to get a processor from another planet or from the future but it would be great wouldn't it?

With the new motherboards with 4 ports of 16x PCI-E and with an upcoming graphics card with dual GPUs like 7950GX2, but with the G80 or the coming G90 architecture this can be reality once again.

Games are slowly taking advatages of multilple processor cores and in a near future with a Quad Core processor, 8 GPUs from Nvidia and games that can take fully advatages of a quad core we could actually set all these GPUs to test. I wonder how much power compared to a single 8800GTX that would be?

When 7950GX2 was launced and used in computer in SLI mode this came with a great power. I can't imagine the same power from 8 GPUs based on G80 or G90-architecture.

Nvidia 8800GTS Review - 640MB versus 320MB in SLI

TweakTown have tested SLI mode on 8800GTS, to compare 320MB versus 640MB in SLI.

Dual Graphics solutions today like SLI and Crossfire can not share the memory so even if you have two 640MB cards, the same data is stored on both cards. Apparently the writer didnt know about this but the test is still very interesting.

But we all know that 320MB compared to 640MB is huge different if we active AA, HDR and high resolutions. We can clearly see in the test that the memory is the limitation in some test and the difference between 640MB and 320MB becomes huge.

Take this test for an example. High resolution Half-life 2 with HDR

It's 3 times faster than the card with only 320MB. This acctually show how much performance you can lose by buying a card with lesser memory. You might say that you don't play in this resolution but this is an old game with small textures. Newer games like Crysis and other DX10 games can use textures up to 4 times bigger, thanks to DX10. So think twice before buying a graphics card with memory lower than 512MB.

Multiple Graphics Cards (SLI) is here to stay

SLI and Crossfire is not the first systems in the PC history to allow multiple graphics card to work together with one image. Voodoo 2 that was launched in the middle of 90 gave support for up to 3 graphics card in a computer, one primary card (could be any graphics card) and up to two Voodoo 2 cards to boost the performance.

I remember that like today, they provided the ultimate gaming machine. And I believe it was a lot more expensive than it is now. Now you can build up a SLI system with almost any card in the Nvidia serie.

When we go towards greater resolutions on our monitors and the addiction to great graphics we can't ask one little graphics card to do all the hard work. This is why SLI is great, it might expenisve still great.

Playing games with 30" montitor at 2560x1600 and maximum graphics is not just great, it's unbeliveble and the closest thing you can come to reality today. Thanks to multiple 8800GTX, this is possible.

Too bad this is just a dream for me, both the SLI system and the 30" monitor :)
